Wacken Open Air (WOA) is the world’s largest and most famous heavy metal festival. It takes place every year in the small village of Wacken, Germany.
The first edition in 1990 featured only a few local bands and about 800 fans. Today, the festival sells out 75,000 tickets months in advance, turning the village into a “metal city” for several days.
WOA showcases every subgenre of metal—from thrash and death metal to power and folk metal. Its lineup includes legendary acts such as Iron Maiden and Metallica, alongside up-and-coming artists.
More than just music, the festival is known for its strong community spirit and unique traditions. Highlights include the Bullhead City Cantina, the Metal Market, and the unforgettable sense of camaraderie among fans. For many, Wacken has become a pilgrimage destination and the ultimate celebration of heavy metal culture.
