Judas Priest has been responsible for some of the greatest metal albums of all time – “Sad Wings of Destiny”, “Unleashed in the East”, “Painkiller”, etc. But during a recent interview with the That Rocks! Podcast, former Priest guitarist KK Downing was asked which of two albums truly broke the band in the States – “British Steel” (which included “Breaking the Law”, “Living After Midnight”, and “Metal Gods”) or “Screaming for Vengeance”(which featured “Electric Eye”, the title track, and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”). His reply was as follows (transcribed by Ultimate Guitar):
“Definitely ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ was the one, where we really felt like we weren’t rock stars yesterday but today we are. Because the simple reason – because you experience what…every day you walk down the street and you walk past a shop and somebody’s playing one of your songs. Or a car drives by you. It’s just like that scene from the movie [makes a headbanging gesture – probably in reference to the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ scene from ‘Wayne’s World’] when you see people rocking out to ‘You’ve Got Another Thing Comin” or something like that. And almost, you can’t get away from it.”
Downing also recalled experiencing a similar feeling with another metal band a few years back. “And it’s weird because that happened to me with other bands. Do you remember The Darkness, when they had their big album? [‘Permission to Land’] I couldn’t go anywhere, y’know, because on a day off you go out there to Walmart or something, or you’re going to a record store, and on the televisions, they’re playing all the videos. They’re trying to sell televisions, but The Darkness are on there. You can’t escape it. I was really happy for them. But I actually experienced that with Judas Priest – you couldn’t escape Judas Priest in America with that album. So we had to think to ourselves, ‘Fuck, I think we’ve made it guys’.”
