A number of music observers are still debating the historical origin of the guitar. Some believe the guitar came from Spain in the 16th century. The guitar is thought to have originated from the guitarra latina, a medieval instrument with a grooved design and four paired strings that can produce different sounds.

The 16th-century guitar had only the basic tones of C – F – A – D, tuned from the center four of the lute and vihuela. Not only that, this stringed instrument was also relatively smaller in size with a sound hole that was not as wide as today’s guitars.
