Dewa Budjana’s interest and talent in music, especially the guitar, has been very dominant, visible since he was still in elementary school in Klungkung Bali. Based on an interview with Soleh Solihun, Budjana was initially interested in guitar because he saw a poster in his brother’s room. But the first time Budjana learned to play guitar was from a builder who lived near his house, named John. It was from John that Budjana understood and could play the basic chords and Budjana was first taught by John to play a song from Lombok entitled Lalo Midang. Little Budjana once stole his grandmother’s money[2] to fulfill his wish of buying his first guitar for 10,000 rupiah.[3]

Since having this first guitar, Budjana no longer had the enthusiasm to go to school, for him the guitar was number 1. At that time, Budjana taught himself the technique of playing the guitar, and he was able to quickly master Deddy Dores’ song entitled “The Disappearance of a Girl” and the song The Rollies entitled “A Flower”, even though he had not yet been touched by formal music (guitar) literature.
