Brian Elwin Haner, Jr., aka Synyster Gates, is a musician and guitarist for the band Avenged Sevenfold. He received his first guitar from his grandparents and quickly learned songs like Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” From a young age, Brian had a knack for figuring out chord progressions by ear. School became less important to him after receiving a guitar, and his academic performance declined after Grade 4.

Brian joined Avenged Sevenfold as a guitarist at the age of 18 in late 1999. In addition to playing guitar, he also showcased his piano skills on tracks like “Beast and the Harlot” and “Sidewinder.” He wrote his first song, “So Far Away,” as a tribute to his best friend and bandmate, the late James Owen Sullivan (also known as The Rev).

Currently, Brian is recognized as Guitar World’s third Fastest Guitarist of All Time and ranks 87th on their list of the world’s best guitarists.
