
SUGIZO (born Yasuhiro Sugihara, July 8, 1969, in Hadano, Kanagawa) is a Japanese rock musician, composer, and producer. He is best known as the guitarist and violinist for LUNA SEA, X JAPAN, and THE LAST ROCKSTARS.
Raised in a musical family, he began learning violin at the age of three. In his teenage years, he discovered the guitar and soon made it his main instrument. He debuted with LUNA SEA in 1989 and quickly gained recognition for his unique sound.
Beyond his work with bands, SUGIZO built a strong solo career. His music blends rock, electronic, classical, and ambient styles. He also worked with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and DJ Krush, while running projects under his own label. Fans call him “Sugi-chan,” and he is admired for his versatility and experimental approach.
Outside music, SUGIZO takes an active role in social issues. He campaigns for environmental protection and speaks out against nuclear power. He also supports refugee programs and often shares his political views, something rare in Japan’s music industry.
With his creativity, activism, and influence, SUGIZO continues to stand out as one of Japan’s most important and multifaceted musicians.
