The former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett named one classic from the British prog institution’s back catalog that he says became a large influence on the Queen guitarist Brian May.
Aside from being two British gentlemen who both wrote their names in the annals of rock, there is a deeper connection between Mr. Hackett and Mr. May, as the former tells “The Metal Voice” in a recent interview. Despite the fact that Brian May is three years older, Steve Hackett notes how his guitar work on “The Musical Box”, the opener from Genesis’ 1971 studio LP “Nursery Cryme”, and the first to feature both Hackett and Phil Collins, served as an important influence on the Queen guitarist. He said (transcription via Killer Guitar Rigs):
“Well, according to Brian May, he said that my guitar playing on ‘The Musical Box’ — the first track on the first Genesis album I played on — was a big influence on him.”
“Now there are a number of guitar solos on that track, [as] I was given a lot of space on it: there’s a little tinkly one, then there’s a heavy one, and then there’s a harmony one at the end. Specifically, he was thinking of the one at the end that I recorded as a three-part harmony.”
