Six-string icon Robin Trower recalled how his career-long relationship with the Stratocaster began, noting how he “left the Gibson at home” the moment he got Fender’s iconic ax.
The debate of Fender vs Gibson has been going on between guitar players since time immemorial, and often tends to reach the intensity of sports fans’ debate about their favorite teams. The Fender Stratocaster, of course, sits at the heart of this debate, as it is considered by many to be the ultimate instrument a rock guitarist could wield — which is certainly in line with the Procol Harum virtuoso’s own opinion.
Speaking to the Guitarist magazine in a new interview, the 78-year-old icon recalled how he started playing Strats after his band opened for Jethro Tull, and has never looked back since (via Guitar World):
“I discovered them when I was in Procol Harum when we were opening up on a UK tour for Jethro Tull. Their guitarist, Martin Barre, had a Strat as his second guitar and it was on the stage one day when we were getting ready to soundcheck and I picked it up and plugged it into my amp.
