Music Theory: Getting Started With Intervals

What Is an Interval?

An interval is the distance between two pitches. That’s it! Whether two notes are played separately or together, we call the difference in pitch an interval.

We measure them in semitones, which is the space of one fret on the guitar. We can visualize it on our fretboard by thinking it like a ruler. Each fret is like an inch marker, which relates to a semitone. We can then measure up or down a certain distance, aka interval, from any point.

It’s important to know your intervals for a few reasons. They help us map out the fretboard, they help train our ears, and they give us a framework for quickly figuring out scales and chords. Of course, it also helps us communicate notes with fellow musicians.
