MIYAVI: The “Samurai Guitarist” Bridging Music, Film, and Activism

MIYAVI (born September 14, 1981) is a Japanese rock musician, guitarist, actor, and humanitarian. Widely known as the “Samurai Guitarist,” he developed an innovative slap-style guitar technique inspired by both rock and traditional Japanese instruments.

He began his career in 1999 as the guitarist of the visual kei band Dué le quartz before launching a solo career in 2002. Since then, he has released numerous albums, blended Japanese and Western sounds, and collaborated with international artists through his Samurai Sessions project. His work with major labels such as Universal and EMI helped bring his music to global audiences.

Beyond music, MIYAVI expanded into film and humanitarian work. He made his Hollywood debut in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken (2014), which sparked a close friendship with Jolie and deepened his involvement with the UNHCR. In 2017, he became the first Japanese artist to serve as a Goodwill Ambassador for the agency.

MIYAVI has also performed at high-profile global events, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Japan Tour in 2022, and became the first Japanese musician featured in a Gucci global campaign. Proud of his Korean-Japanese heritage, he continues to use his platform to bridge cultures, inspire younger generations, and advocate for refugees worldwide.
