John Petrucci grew up in King Park, Long Island, where he attended school with John Myung and Kevin Moore. He started learning guitar at a young age but temporarily gave up due to seeing his sister’s dedication to learning the organ. However, he became inspired by guitarists like Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and bands like Yes and Rush, leading him to strive for their level of playing. He expanded his influences to metal bands like Metallica and Queensryche and incorporated techniques from guitarists such as Steve Morse, Steve Vai, and Eddie Van Halen.

During high school, Petrucci took music theory classes and continued his education in jazz composition and harmony at Berklee College of Music. It was there that he formed the band Majesty, later renamed Dream Theater, with John Myung and Mike Portnoy. He has recorded seven albums with Dream Theater and participated in various side projects, including Liquid Tension Experiment and the G3 project with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

Outside of music, Petrucci lives in New York with his wife and children and enjoys spending time with them, engaging in activities such as skating and biking. He is also planning to release his first solo album, featuring songs he previously played with G3 and collaborating with musicians like Dave LaRue, Dave DiCenso, and Tony Verderosa.
