Joe Bonamassa Shares Opinion on ‘Elitist’ Vintage Guitar Market, Names One Guitar He Regretted Selling

Joe Bonamassa looked back on how the vintage guitar market has changed since he got his first ’59 Les Paul in 1990, and named one vintage guitar that he regretted selling.

Vintage guitars continue to be the subject of adoration among many guitar players, and JoBo has proven to be one of the most passionate collectors out there. As someone who’s been buying and selling vintage instruments for decades, however, he is the first to admit that the “hobby” — although Joe himself prefers the term “addiction” — has some serious drawbacks, which have only grown more acute.

During a recent interview on the “Tone Talk” podcast, the guitarist noted how vintage guitars have grown to be insanely expensive, and that making a single mistake while evaluating an instrument could cost one a lot of money (transcribed by Ultimate Guitar):

“In 1990, I remember seeing my first ’59 Les Paul, and I think it was priced [around] $8,500, which was staggering, right? Now, they’re in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. And you better know what you’re looking at, because one mistake could cost you six figures if you’re wrong about something.”

Although Joe notes how his experience of collecting vintage guitars has definitely been positive in some regards, he suggests that those ’59 Les Pauls may not offer a world of difference to someone exclusively interested in their sonic attributes
