Electric guitars were originally designed by guitar makers, electronics enthusiasts and instrument manufacturers. Guitar innovator Les Paul adapted a hollow bodied instrument using tungsten pick ups. These guitars were manufactured by the Electro String Instrument Corporation in 1932. Their first design was created by Harry Watson, an expert working at the Electro String Company. The new guitar was named Rickenbacker by the company and became the first of its kind. The first documented performance with an electric guitar was in 1932 by guitarist Gage Brewer.
