Hideto Matsumoto (1964–1998), better known as hide, was a Japanese guitarist, singer, and producer. He rose to fame as a member of X JAPAN and later built an influential solo career.

Born in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, hide overcame a shy childhood to become a central figure in Japan’s rock and visual kei movement. Fans admired him for his bold style, innovative sound, and fearless creativity. In 1987, he joined X JAPAN, contributing both musically and visually. He later launched a solo career with hide with Spread Beaver and founded the label LEMONeD to support indie artists.

His music blended punk, metal, and experimental elements, pushing the boundaries of Japanese rock. Despite his sudden death in 1998 at the age of 33, his influence endures. Posthumous releases, tribute projects, and annual memorial events continue to celebrate his work.
