Guitar innovations in the 19th century

In the 17th century, the guitar rose to prominence thanks to the decline in popularity of the lute and vihuela. During this time, a number of famous guitarists emerged in Europe, such as Gaspar Sanz (1674s), Robert de Visée (1650-1725), Fernando Sor (1778-1839).

As the guitar’s popularity waned towards the end of the 19th century, Antonio Torres made the development of the guitar even more rapid by creating the classical guitar. This guitar was strung with three gut and three metal-spun silk strings.

To produce louder and more melodic melodies, Torres utilized nylon or plastic materials. Other types of guitars invented were the 12-string or double-course guitar and the small five-course guitar, such as the Mexican jaranan and the South American charango.

As time progressed, this stringed instrument came in various types, ranging from ukulele, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, to bass.
