Guitar History

The guitar is a stringed instrument that was probably born in Spain in the early 16th century and is descended from the guitarra latina, a medieval instrument with a tapered body and four strings. search Early guitars were narrower and deeper than modern guitars, and the waist was less visible. It is closely related to the vihuela, a guitar-shaped instrument played in Spain instead of the lute.

search Early guitars had four strings that stretched from a violin-like peg box to a tension bridge attached to a soundboard or berry. The sustain pulls directly from the strings. There were round earcups on the belly, often decorated with rosewood carvings. 16th century guitar with notes C-F-A-D, four center lutes and Vihuela tuning

From the 16th century to the 19th century, several changes were made to the instrument. The fifth string was added before 1600. The sixth string was added in the late 18th century. Before 1800, guitars were generally tuned to E-A-D-G-B-E. Violin-like peg boxes were replaced in the 16th century with flat, slightly reflective peg boxes with rear adjustment pegs.
