and spoke about which younger bands could continue to carry the torch of thrash metal after its founding fathers are gone.
In addition to the growing discontent with the music industry’s current operating model, life for musicians hasn’t been the same since the pandemic first hit. The increase in prices meant that touring didn’t pay off as much for some musicians, leading others to completely abandon the prospect (or previously booked parts of their trek) for the time being.
Exodus wasn’t immune to those changes either, as Gary Holt explained during a recent fan Q&A session at Seattle’s Diablo Guitars. Asked by a fan to name younger bands he sees as carrying the torch of thrash metal, Gary said (transcribed by Ultimate Guitar):
“I don’t know, that’s hard to say. The industry has completely changed. It’s really hard on bands. Now it’s hard on Exodus, you know, some venues have taken up to 35% of our merch money, we depend on that share. Everything else costs twice as much, and they’re taking twice as much.
“You can only imagine how hard it is for a younger band. Before tragedy struck, I would have said Power Trip, without a doubt. They had all the fire, energy and spark of the early days of thrash. I guess I’d say Lamb of God [are] definitely carrying the torch, but they’re veterans themselves…So it’s hard to say.”
