Colin James (born 1964) is a Canadian guitarist, singer, and songwriter who built his career by blending traditional blues with modern rock, swing, and soul. With fiery guitar playing, a soulful voice, and impressive versatility, James has become one of Canada’s most respected and enduring musical figures.
Born Colin James Munn in Regina, Saskatchewan, he picked up the guitar as a teenager. Inspired by blues legends like B.B. King, Albert King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, James quickly developed his own style. His big break came in the mid-1980s when he opened for Stevie Ray Vaughan. Vaughan encouraged him to continue pursuing music, giving him the confidence to move forward.
In 1988, James released his self-titled debut album Colin James. The record included the hit single Voodoo Thing and went platinum in Canada. This success established him as one of the country’s rising stars in blues-rock.
Over the following decades, James expanded his sound. He explored swing with Colin James and the Little Big Band, while also returning to his blues roots on later records. His ability to shift between styles—electric blues, acoustic sets, and big-band swing—proved his versatility and creativity.
Colin James has earned multiple Juno Awards, platinum albums, and a loyal fan base that spans generations. Today, he remains a vital force in Canadian music, carrying the torch for blues-rock while continuing to evolve as an artist.
