The International Fingerstyle Guitar Festival in Shanghai 2011 marked a turning point in Asia’s guitar culture. Held on October 15–16 at Shanghai’s East Asian Art Center, the festival ran in partnership with the Music China Expo, one of the continent’s largest music industry gatherings. The event welcomed musicians, fans, and luthiers from around the world, all united by their love for fingerstyle guitar.
A Celebration of Fingerstyle Music
The International Fingerstyle Guitar Festival was more than a series of concerts. It created an inclusive space where audiences could enjoy performances by international masters, rising talents, and local Chinese guitarists. The diversity of the lineup highlighted fingerstyle’s unique ability to blend melody, rhythm, and harmony into a single performance.
Beyond the main stage, competitions gave aspiring players the chance to showcase their skills. For many young musicians, this was the first opportunity to perform on an international platform.
A special highlight of the International Fingerstyle Guitar Festival was its exhibition of handcrafted guitars. Luthiers presented their work, allowing visitors to test instruments, discuss design innovations, and appreciate the artistry behind guitar building. This exchange bridged the gap between creators and players.
In addition, workshops and masterclasses gave students the chance to learn directly from fingerstyle icons. These sessions not only improved technique but also built a sense of community among guitar enthusiasts.
