Robert Fripp: Progressive Rock Visionary

Robert Fripp

Robert Fripp (born 1946, England) is the guitarist and founder of King Crimson, one of progressive rock’s most influential bands. Known for his disciplined, intellectual approach, he created “Frippertronics,” a tape-loop system that produced layered, atmospheric soundscapes.

With King Crimson, albums like In the Court of the Crimson King (1969) redefined prog rock through complexity and experimentation. Outside the band, Fripp worked with David Bowie—playing the iconic guitar line on Heroes—and collaborated with Brian Eno on groundbreaking ambient projects.

Unlike most rock showmen, Fripp often performed seated, highlighting precision over flash. Through his Guitar Craft seminars, he also educated generations of players. His innovations have inspired countless guitarists seeking to expand the instrument’s possibilities.
