Newport Jazz Festival

Newport Jazz Festival

The Newport Jazz Festival, founded in 1954 by Elaine and Louis Lorillard and organized by George Wein, is one of the most iconic jazz festivals in the United States. Held each summer in Newport, Rhode Island, it began at the Newport Casino and quickly expanded, featuring legends such as Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong. Historic moments include Davis’s 1955 performance of “‘Round Midnight” and Ellington’s 1956 “Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue.”

After facing issues of overcrowding and relocations—including a move to New York in the 1970s—the festival returned permanently to Newport in 1981 at Fort Adams State Park. It continues to present world-class jazz and related genres, leaving a legacy of unforgettable performances, documentaries, and recordings. Despite sponsorship changes, cultural shifts, and pandemic cancellations, Newport remains a cornerstone of global jazz culture.
