Masayoshi Takanaka

Masayoshi Takanaka (born Ryu Masayoshi, March 27, 1953) is a Japanese guitarist, composer, and producer, widely regarded as a pioneer of Japanese rock and fusion. Born in Tokyo to a Chinese father and Japanese mother, he began his career in the early 1970s with the Sadistic Mika Band before launching a successful solo career.

Known for his tropical-inspired melodies and signature Blue Lagoon sound, Takanaka became a leading figure in Japan’s fusion boom. His hit albums, including Jolly Jive (1979) and Rainbow Goblins (1981), defined the era. On stage, his flamboyant outfits, custom guitars, and lively presence established him as a trailblazing showman.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Takanaka remains celebrated for blending technical mastery with upbeat summer vibes, securing his place as one of Japan’s most iconic guitarists.
