Summer Sonic is an annual urban music festival organized by Creativeman Productions, held every August in Chiba and Osaka. The event features simultaneous performances, with artists alternating between the two cities. The first edition took place in 2000, initially in Yamanashi, inspired by the UK’s Reading & Leeds Festival. Its original concept was a “summer urban festival” that fans could easily attend on a day trip.
While Summer Sonic first focused on Western rock, it has since expanded to embrace a wide range of genres including J-Pop, idol groups, and electronic music, attracting audiences of all ages. Today, the festival draws more than 100,000 attendees over two days. Its lineup has included major international acts such as Radiohead, Metallica, and Arctic Monkeys, as well as Japanese headliners like B’z, who in 2019 became the first Japanese band to headline the festival.
Alongside its main event, Summer Sonic also spawned several sister festivals, including Sonicmania, Punk Spring, Springroove, and Loud Park. Together, these events have cemented Summer Sonic’s status as one of Japan’s most prominent and influential music festivals.
