John grew up on Long Island, specifically in King Park, where he, John Myung & Kevin Moore went to school together. John started learning guitar when he was 12 years old

(previously he had studied when he was 8 years old but gave up when he saw his older brother had to stay up late every night learning to play the organ. He didn’t plan to be like that, he studied guitar after school and eventually he became not interested anymore).
